CAFECITO DE CUBA CAPSULE REVIEW
With relationships with Cuba finally easing, here comes one of the first Cuban coffee imports, courtesy of Nespresso. Priced at $1.25 per capsule, this new limited edition wants to make you feel privileged, like if you were enjoying a Cuba cigar, and it definitely provides a distinctive experience. Unlike most Nespresso cups, this one is very short, intense but with a soft texture. If you pay attention when sipping it, you might feel tobacco – and maybe citrus – hints and it leaves you with a brief, slightly spicy aftertaste. As to whether it’s worth paying such a steep price for a coffee, I believe it is worth having a couple sleeves in your collection but it’s certainly not an everyday capsule as it is particularly intense and pricey.
COFFEE PAIRING
- Activities: with its strong, distinctive taste, this coffee makes for a good wakeup call and I would suggest sticking to two of these maximum. I find it however too intense to have after lunch, as we do it in Europe, as it will undermine any early flavors.
- Music: this one is a no-brainer, my pick going to the Ry Cooder-curated Cuban album The Buena Vista Social Club which I got lucky enough to see played live in Los Angeles when it got released.
- Food: chocolate wafer sticks make a good pairing as the chocolate flavor can pierce through Cafecito de Cuba’s tang.
PACKAGING
As it’s always the case with limited edition coffees, Nespresso created a sophisticated design for this new release. The Cafecito de Cuba box features a blue map of the ocean, a red logo as well as the name of the coffee in a white font. As for the capsules, they are white with the coffee’s name in red.
